When’s the best time to engage an interior designer?

One of the most common questions we hear is: “When should I bring in an interior designer?”

The answer: earlier than you think.

Our beautiful Myrtle House project benefitted from a strong core team of interior designer, builder and cabinet maker - all committed to a successful project.

Well before any building work starts!
Engaging a designer in the early stages - often alongside your architect or building designer, ensures that the interior layout, joinery, and finishes are considered from the start. This prevents awkward “fixes” later when plans are already finalised.

How We Work with Architects & Building Designers
We collaborate closely to align the structural design with your lifestyle needs. While architects and building designers focus on form, function, and compliance, we focus on the human experience inside - from storage and lighting to sight lines and material selection.

A Typical Timeline

  • 6–12+ months before construction Engage your interior designer. We’ll review your brief, budget, and floor plans, and start concept development.

  • 3–6 months before construction Finalise finishes, fittings, and joinery details. We liaise with your builder and cabinet maker to ensure everyone is onboard with the design direction and iron out any challenges before they become onsite issues.

  • During construction Site visits, troubleshooting, and ensuring the design intent is delivered exactly as planned.

We help streamline communication between consultants, builders, and suppliers — meaning fewer surprises for you. Think of us as the link between the vision and the execution.

The Benefit of Early Engagement
Early involvement allows us to influence key decisions like window placement, room sizes, and service locations - all of which impact furniture layouts, lighting, and functionality.

Hiring an interior designer is an investment in your home, your time, and your peace of mind. Trust me, we’re far more qualified than taking advice from your cat’s vet who recently renovated their kitchen!

If you’re thinking about building or renovating, don’t wait until you’re choosing paint colours to call a designer - let’s talk. Get us involved early, and your future self will thank you.

We’ll handle the details so you can focus on enjoying your home! See also our custom joinery design and interior design services.
