Bringing Nature In: A Chat with Abbie from Minty Greenhouse
There’s something undeniably grounding about having greenery in your home. And no one understands this better than Abbie, the woman behind Minty Greenhouse — a local gem of a plant store nestled here on the Mornington Peninsula.
We love collaborating with small businesses who share our passion for thoughtful, layered interiors and sustainable living. Abbie brings a calm, no-fuss energy to plant care, helping people find joy (and success!) in introducing greenery to their spaces. We recently sat down with her to chat all things indoor plants, plant-parent confidence, and what’s thriving in her own home.
Full of life and colour, you’ll find more than just plants at Minty Greenhouse!
Why do you think indoor plants have become such a staple in beautiful, thoughtfully designed homes — beyond just the aesthetic?
Abbie: Indoor plants have become such important elements in our interiors lately and for so many reasons! They don't just purify our air, boost our moods and enhance productivity — they give us connection to nature, which we as humans are hard wired to need. In a world where higher density living is becoming more common, it's even more important to bring the greenery indoors.
For people who are a bit nervous about plant care — what are your top three low-maintenance indoor plants that thrive in most homes?
Abbie: You really can't go past Monstera deliciosa, Sansevieria and Zanzibar Gem as some of the easiest and lowest maintenance plants available! They'll all tolerate most light conditions and won't punish you too badly if you miss watering day.
How can people start to include plants in their home — what are your top locations for indoor plants?
Abbie: I always say to begin your plant journey by including plants in the spaces where you live the most — kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms. Enjoy them! When you see them every day, you’ll begin to notice what they need and when they need it. Once you’re confident, you can add plants to bedrooms, bathrooms — the lesser-used spaces. It’s all about building layers gradually, so it doesn’t become a chore.
What are the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to indoor plant care — and how can we avoid them?
Abbie: The big one is over-loving them — especially with watering. In cooler months, restraint is key. Plants slow down in winter, so adjusting your usual watering routine is essential. A solid fertilising regime is also important — think of it like giving your body nutrients to stay strong. And don’t forget to move your plants seasonally — light shifts dramatically throughout the year, and your plants will thank you for chasing the sun.
How do you personally bring greenery into your own home — is there a particular plant or spot that brings you the most joy?
Abbie: We’re quite considered at home because only some of our windows are north-facing — mostly in our kitchen and dining space — so that’s where we focus. Not masses of plants, but varieties we love and know will thrive there. My absolute favourite is my Phalaenopsis Orchid. I’d never had success before and this was my last go… and it flowered on Christmas Day! It now lives on the bench next to my kettle so I get to admire and chat to it every day. It’s even pushing out two new shoots right now — my biggest plant win yet.
Abbie and Brad, owners of Minty Greenhouse
Whether it’s a sprawling Monstera in the corner or a humble orchid by the kettle, indoor plants bring so much life to a home — not just visually, but emotionally too. Abbie’s approach reminds us that you don’t need a jungle — just a few thoughtfully placed plants, and the willingness to notice them.
We’re big believers in supporting local — and Abbie’s Minty Greenhouse is the perfect go-to for beautiful, healthy indoor plants and expert advice, right here on the Peninsula.
