Material of the Month: Cork
Let’s talk about cork. Yes, the stuff you pull out of your wine bottle — but before you go popping anything open, cork deserves a moment in the spotlight for its impressive qualities as a design material.
Cork is harvested from the bark of the cork oak tree — a process that doesn’t harm the tree and allows it to regenerate. In fact, cork oaks can live for over 200 years, and the bark can be harvested every 9 years. It’s one of the most sustainable materials available, and unlike many others, it’s genuinely renewable, biodegradable, and recyclable.
Beyond its eco credentials, cork brings serious functionality. It’s naturally anti-microbial, resistant to mould and mildew, and offers acoustic and thermal insulation — making it particularly great for busy, family-focused homes that need to work hard and look good. It’s also soft underfoot and forgiving — handy if you have small kids or the occasional clumsy moment (guilty).
Where to use it?
Cork has come a long way from retro floor tiles (though let’s not dismiss those either — cork flooring can be warm, textural, and surprisingly chic). These days, we’re seeing it used in:
Flooring – warm, tactile, and soft underfoot. Works beautifully in kitchens and play areas.
Wall and ceiling panels – ideal for adding texture, absorbing sound, and giving a space that grounded, natural feel.
Joinery and cabinetry – a great alternative to standard laminates. It pairs beautifully with timber and natural stone.
Furniture and decor – from cork stools to lighting, this material can bring in a subtle, earthy element without shouting about it.
Bonus: it's lightweight, easy to work with, and naturally non-toxic.
Cork lends itself well to calm, curated interiors that feel connected to nature — which is exactly the kind of home my clients on the Mornington Peninsula are often looking for. If you’re after something sustainable, tactile and a little bit unexpected, cork might just be the material you didn’t know you needed.
